Day 85 - The End

And the winner is.........

It’s finally over!  I think everyone let out a sigh of relief after they stepped off the scales Monday morning!  When the 27 of us began, we weighed 5577.1 pounds collectively which was an average of 206 pounds per person.  As of Monday, we lost a combined 404.2 pounds, or 7.25% of our starting weight and we now have an average of 191 pounds per person.  Think about 404 pounds lost… that’s equivalent to 2 whole people!  That is an amazing job and everyone should be proud of themselves!

Thanks to everyone for doing this with me, it was a total group effort here at work and at home.  My ultimate goal wasn’t achieved, but I knew it wouldn’t be in 12 weeks, I am on a six month plan.  I am about ½ way to my ultimate goal and I am eating better and getting more exercise, the rest will take a bit more time.  Even better, my entire household is eating healthier and getting more exercise which is more rewarding than just me dropping weight by myself.

I hope everyone continues their own “Biggest Loser” to achieve their goals even though our contest is over.  Losing weight doesn’t mean you have to starve yourself and eliminate your favorite things from your diet forever.  Smarter choices and moderation can take you a long way.  J

Congratulations to our winners! The final results are:

The winners – Bonnie, Jamie and Team 4.

Second Place – Tammy, David Jr. and Team 5.

Thanks again, and everyone did a fantastic job!  And don’t worry; the spread sheet is getting deleted right after I get done posting this!

2 weeks left.........

2 weeks left!  I know there are some people that really want this to end, but I know for others this is just the first leg of their weight loss journey.  For what ever reason you had for joining this pool, I hope the ulitmate goal was to do something for yourself, and if your ultimate goal isn't reached in two weeks, you still stick with it after we're done.

Congratulations of Len who has exceeded 100% of his weight loss goal.  Great Job!!

The leaderboad remains the same, but the competion is still close.

For those that still owe money,  I have 8 people left, please get it to me by the end of the week.

If you won't be here for the final weigh in on 3-31,  please make arrangements with me when you want your final weight taken. We need to have everyone weigh in for the end.

3 weeks to go...............

I'd like to say Congratulations to Lauren who has reached well over 100% of her goal weight to lose!!!!!! What an awesome acheivement!

All together we've lost a combined 334.5 pounds which is 6% of our starting weight!  We are now down to an averaage of 194.17 per person,  when we started 9 weeks ago we were at 206.5 per person.  Everyone keep up the good work, stay focused, we still have 3 more weeks.

The final weigh in is March 31st,  I was hoping that each team could bring in something in and we could have a big loser lunch that Monday and hand out the prize money.  So talk to your team, and let me know what your bringing in so I can keep a list.  If you haven't paid for March yet, please do so with in the next week.

We had a lot of addtions to the "pounds clubs".  Check out the lists somewhere on here and see everyone's progress!

The leader board remains the same, Bonnie, David Jr and Team 4,  Congrats to our leaders, but it's still anyone's game.  I'll see everyone next Monday morning!

Day 43

After 6 weeks.....

We are 1/2 way there!!!!!

We are 6 weeks in, with 6 weeks left to go.  I think in January no one realized how long 12 weeks is and the honeymoon period may be officially over.  Last week we didn’t have a lot of people here on Monday to weight in, but this week we had a lot of people just not weigh in even though they were here in the office.  I understand the weekends have challenges for everyone involved in this pool.  I go through the same things as everyone else starting Friday nights, but for the rest of our lives the weekends are never going away.  Skipping the scale Monday morning just because you think you did bad isn’t a way to fix it, and you could be hurting team.

We have some people that have hit plateaus and some people who are dieting and exercising and losing inches, but the scale isn’t moving downward for them.  I’m not an expert at weight loss, (obviously look at me! LOL!!) but I will do some research on this.

We have received a lot of samples from our vendors in an effort to help us through our challenge.  I’ve got some spares in my office of the items I’ve already handed out if anyone is interested in some extra granola or cereal. I do have to update the vendor section of our site to add the past couple vendors that sent in samples. I’ll try to do it one night this week when I get some free time at home.   An extra big thanks goes to Lauren who helped immensely in getting the samples!

I was thinking that at the end, on 3-31 we should all have a lunch together and hand out the prize money.  Each team can bring in something (beverages, sandwiches or whatever) but we can decide that later on. Speaking of the prize money, I’ve had a few people mention how they want it to be divided out.  Now provided all 27 of us stay in until the end the total will be $810.  What I would like to do is $30 for the second place male and female, and $90 for the second place team.  $330 for the first place team and $165 for the first place male and female. Email me at our hhbiggestloser email by the end of the week. You tell me how you want the money split, and the majority wins. If you don’t place a vote, you don’t have a say, so no complaining afterwards.  J

If you gave me your weight goals at the beginning of this, I’ve been able to keep track of how close you are to your goal and by weeks.  I have everything updated on the column to the left but for some reason they aren’t showing the commentary lately that I’ve been putting in, I’ll have to fiddle with that later.  As of weeks 4 & 5, Lauren and Len hit 75% of their goals and as of today, Jamie and Marilyn have hit 50% of their goals.  Great job folks!

Collectively we lost another 19 pounds this week bringing our total to 261.7 pounds to date, 4.69% of our starting weight.  Our leader board still looks the same, Bonnie, Dave Jr and Team 4.  Congrats to our leaders, keep up the good work!

Standings are below, everyone hang in there for next week, and don’t forget to drink your water, lots of water!

Day 36

After 5 weeks.......

I'm not going into a long narrative today.  There were a lot of people that weren't here for weigh ins and as a whole, we didn't have a stellar week.  Collectively, we all have to stay focused and keep working. 12 weeks is a long time, but we are almost 1/2 way.  Let't not give up,  keep your eyes on your goals!

Congratulations to our leaders so far - Bonnie for the women, David Jr for the men and Team #4.

Everyone is still hanging on.  We've had a few weight gains and a few plateaus, but that's ok.  Remember to stick with it!!!  Talk to your teammate, and there might be something they can help you with.  This is a long process, but it will be worth it at the end!   All together we lost 230.3 pounds, 4.25% of our starting weight!  That's great news and collectively we continue to lose weight each week, so we're doing something right.  The standings are below... If you weren't here for a weigh in, I used your weight from last week.

So far so good.  We had a couple of people with some up weeks, but that's ok.  We have all have days that are going to be harder than others, we just have to keep working.  Remember, it's not always the actual number, if your pants are looser that's a good thing too.

Check out the "weight tracker" to the left of the blog.  Overall, we are down 206 pounds.  Together we lost a whole person!  Current standings are below,  if you weren't here for weigh ins, I used last week's weight.  February is around the corner,  if you can get me the $ by next Friday that would be great.  Everyone keep up the good work!

Just some thoughts

Being Wednesday,  I went to everyone's desk this morning to see how they were holding up with our Challenge.  Most people were great and had the same enthusiasm and dedication as last week, but a few were a little less motivated this morning.

Dieting isn't easy, it's not normally fun and 12 weeks is a long time.  But I have shocked myself as to how well I've held up for 10 days with the exercise and food, and I've had fun doing this.  I really like the team concept and it's helped keep me motivated. Normally I would have caved into my old routine by now because it's easier and more time effiecient, or so I thought.  My mother said "You have a different perspective when others are depending on you".

My life is hectic, as is the life every other parent, child, mother/father, spouse, person's life that's in this pool.  I've often joked that I need a vacation just to catch up on my life.  There's only so much time in a day/week and we have to fit in work, helping with homework, grocery shopping, making dinner, cleaning the house, spending time with your family, dropping off and picking up the kids from sporting events, paying bills, doing laundry, refereeing fights between the kids and everything that I didn't list that goes into running a household and having a family or just having a life.  Now I have to fit in exercise too?  But since this started, there's a brand new schedule and some new priorities, and if I mess this up, Jr will never let me hear the end of it! LOL!!   My scheduling may get creative, but it can be done.  I've cooked healthy dinners almost everynight, the nights I didn't cook, we had leftovers.  But I haven't ordered take out 10 days and i've gone to the gym more times in 10 days than I have gone in 6 months.  Some nights have been a struggle, but it got done, and so far it's been worth it.

12 weeks seem like a long time now, but it will be here sooner than you realize.  Stay focused.  We're all going to be just fine.

Day 8

After 1 week.........

Our first weigh in, to measure our success so far, was today.  If you weren't weighed in, I will use your previous week's weight.

Please remember everyone’s body is different.  Some bodies may have been very friendly to the new diet and lifestyle and were able to drop a lot of weight.  Some bodies may be resisting the change and not a lot of weight was dropped.  Some bodies may be REALLY resisting the change and you could have gained some or not lose anything at all, (it's not unusual, Don't get discouraged!).  And some bodies may fall in the middle and consistently lose the same amount every week.  Whatever body yours happens to be, be proud of the work you've done so far, and stick to it.  This is just the first week.  March 31st is a ways off; there is plenty of time to reach your goal.

After the initial weigh in, our total weight for the 27 of us was 5605.4 pounds.  That's an average of 207.6 pounds per person.  After today, our total weight is 5491.3 pounds, an average of 203.4 pounds per person.  Combined we lost 114.1 pounds, which is 2.04% of our starting weight!  Great job, everyone!!!

Let's track the weights again next Monday to measure our progress.  Get me between 8-9 in the morning, and we'll have the scale in the kitchen back by my office.

Keep up the good work!!

Let's get Moving!!!

I saw everyone today to see how they are doing, and everyone looks like they are doing great and still on board.  I'm hoping it's not just the honeymoon phase, and we all stay this motivated and dedicated for the entire 12 weeks.  I'm hoping over the next 12 weeks it won't get tougher, but we will be more accustomed to the new life style.

We've got some more team photos loaded,  the 2 teams remaining without before pictures are Team 4 and Team 5,  I'll try again tomorrow.  Speaking of Team 4,  Jill is out right now with bronchitis.  We all wish her a speedy recovery!  When she comes back to work, I'll see if she still wants to be in the pool.  If she doesn't (I don't know if I would want to start dieting after bronchitis) that's ok.  Her health comes first,  and we'll cross that bridge if/when we get there.

I've been holding off on publishing team weights.  There were mixed reviews about that being a good idea.   I was thinking after we weigh in Monday, I can send out the team and individual percentages lost.  Let me know if that's okay or if you want to know your team's staring point.  It would just take me a few minutes to type everything Thursday night, but I would have to know if you want the team weight sent to everyone or only your team.

Watch out for Team #9 folks, they mean business!  Lauren came in Tuesday asking Patty if they wanted to walk during their lunch break.  They were going to circle the parking lot since it was nice out.  Patty drove the perimeter of the parking lot in her car to measure the distance, and 5 laps equal 1 mile.  So today, a walking club begin.  Patty, Lauren, Erin, Madalyn and myself brought in sneakers and we did the "Haddon House mile".  For anyone interested,  meet at 12:30pm by the time clock.  Bring your sneakers and a change of shirt if needed.  It took less than 1/2 hour to get 1 mile done.  Lauren and Patty are doing this every day, warm or cold (I'm telling you they are a force!) so bring appropriate clothing.  One more note on this,  David Sr. said on days that the weather is bad, we are more than welcome to do laps in the warehouse.  A very generous offer on the rainy awful winter days.  Thanks David!!  So if you're not able to go to a gym or don't want to walk by yourself at night,  this is a great opportunity at lunch time for everyone to take advantage of.

Remember, we are all in this together, no one is by themselves, at all.  If you need someone to talk to about your diet, exercise or even a little moral support, grab someone in the pool, even if they are not on your own team.  There are 26 of us in the office, that's just about 50% of the employees!  We're in almost every department and everyone can spare a minute if needed.

Until next time....

The Initial Weigh-Ins

Today was a great day!  We have a total of 27 people (yes 27!  woo hoo!) in the pool now, so we are going to have 9 teams of 3.  There were 2 people missing from the initial weigh-ins today, but we'll get them tomorrow.  I got before pictures of 3 teams,  some of people were camera shy, but I will ambush them tomorrow too, whether they like it or not. ;)

Today during the initial weigh-ins, it was a little tough. No one was particularly fond of their number,  but that's why we all decided to do this.  For the 25 people weighed, our combine weight was over 5200 pounds.    But the great thing was everyone was so excited to finally get started, and we were all talking about our diets and strategies.  We have people doing Weight Watchers, Atkins, South Beach,  and diets that didn't have a particular name, but watching calories and incorporating more excersise in their daily lives.

Overall I think everyone was supportive of each other,  1/2 of the office is doing this together.  But the competitive spirit is coming out in everyone, too.  There has been talk of ordering pizza for people on other teams,  cooking fattening meals and putting them in the kitchen to see who will cave,  having companies take people out to lunch at fattening places, and so on.  I call it sabbotage, others would say they are testing each others will power, but it's all in good fun, at least I hope it is. LOL!   The teams are mixed from people in different departments,  we pulled numbers out of a hat to see what team they'll be in.  If anything, there will be inter-office communication that never was there before, which I think is a good thing no matter what the weight results end up being.

We're going to do weigh-ins every Monday to keep track of our progress, and on the 28th of this month will be the next "official" weigh-in so we can see exactly where the teams stand.

I'll post the rest of the teams when I get their pictures,  and I'll send out this link so the entire pool can take a look at the page and add their own thoughts.  I need to go now if I'm ever going to make the gym tomorrow morning!

Until next week....

The Haddon House Biggest Loser Pool

Haddon House is a specialty food distributor whose corporate office is located in Medford, New Jersey.  I (Kim) have been an employee there for over 14 years.  I was watching the season finale of the Biggest Loser a couple of weeks ago and was inspired to do something about my weight, but I didn’t want to do it by myself.  Eating healthy at home isn't so hard, but what kills me is what I eat work.  Working for a specialty food distributor means there is all sorts of food in the office tempting me all day long.  And my position at the company is a food buyer, more specifically the candy buyer, which means there is twice as much temptation in my offiice with candy and cookies I look at everyday.  Also being a mother, I often do errands on my lunch hour so I have more time in the evening to cook, clean, help with homework and spend time with my family. So I either don’t eat at lunch, or I make very bad choices when I do eat.  So as I watched the finale, and saw the 1,000,000 pound challenge advertised, I thought if being at work was my downfall then maybe I should ask my co-workers if they wanted to diet with me.  They face the same obstacles I do every day in the office, and  if I was going to “suffer”, wouldn’t be more enjoyable if others were suffering with me; the more the merrier, right?

The next day I sent out a general email to all of the office employees (there are about 50 of us or so, maybe a little more), that at the beginning of the year we could do a Biggest Loser Pool.  We have football pools, lottery pools, baby pools, why not start a pool that we could all benefit from?  I thought I would be lucky if 5 people said yes.  I couldn’t have been more surprised when my inbox was flooded with emails of people saying that they were in.  We have a grand total of 25 people in the pool now!

The basic guidelines are that we each pay $10 per month.  The pool is going to start Monday January 7th, and end Monday March 31st.  We are going to split up into 5 teams of 5.  Prizes will be awarded to the team with the largest percentage of weight loss as well as the individual male and female with the largest percentage of weight loss. Everyone’s enthusiasm has been remarkable.  This afternoon there were so many people talking about how they couldn’t wait for Monday to come.  I work with a great bunch of people, and I know that this experience will be a positive one for all of us.

I will be back here regularly to post updates and pictures, and I hope my co-workers will post their thoughts and feelings too.  I did make a promise to everyone that I would not tell their individual weights (which is why I went with a group website), so only team weights o individual percentages will be posted.  But if someone loses 50 pounds, I’m certainly going to tell the world!  That’s an amazing feat that anyone should be proud of.

Until next week…..
